About the Role 

In this role, you will provide full life cycle product counseling - from ideation to end-of-life - including advising on issues relating to privacy, contractual commitments to our customers and partners, licensing, including open source, trademark, patents, communications, and contracting. You will develop a deep understanding of our product and business model to hear and answer questions that aren't asked and translate technical and security concerns into answers understandable to non-technical lawyers. To be successful in this role, you must be able to work independently, build systems and processes, and collaborate with teams and colleagues around the world.

What You Will Do:

• Develop playbooks, checklists, training materials and other documentation to facilitate product initiatives and to share knowledge with the legal team
• Provide legal review and approval for all new product initiatives
• Review marketing and other communications relating to products and services
• Manage Confluent's growing IP portfolio, including patents, trademarks, trade secrets, copyright, and other intellectual property rights
• Advising the engineering and product team on open-source software use and licensing, including the implications of using, contributing, and distributing open-source code
  
  

What You Will Bring:

• Minimum 8+ years relevant legal experience at a top law firm and/or in-house focusing on product, privacy, open source, and/or IP law
• Strong understanding of software technology, open source software, and cloud services, associated business models, and technology industry trends
• Technical background or a demonstrated ability to acquire deep product understanding

• Practical experience working with business copyright and trademark teams, including working with brand and development teams to implement copyright and trademark strategies

What Gives You an Edge:

• Experience working for an open-core company offering both on-prem and SaaS products to business customers
• Hands-on experience working with an engineering team on software development IP issues, including open-source use and licensing

At Confluent, we are committed to providing competitive pay and benefits that are in line with industry standards. We analyze and carefully consider several factors when determining compensation, including work history, education, professional experience, and location.  This position has an annual estimated salary of $193,000- $222,000 a competitive equity package and is also eligible for additional commission and/or bonus pay. The actual pay may vary depending on your skills, qualifications, experience, and work location. In addition, Confluent offers a wide range of employee benefits.
